Calculator and coffins
Almost six decades ago when I was just a child I remember that almost daily I visited my uncle’s house. He was the elder of the Qumsiyeh clan. He was a mayor of my town for a while. He was highly respected for solving any issue in town between families. He was a quiet man and he would listen carefully but when he spoke with his raspy soft voice, everyone would listen. People who wronged others would apologize and social order was restored. The whole town admired this man who they respectfully called Abu Jalal (father of Jalal). Behind every man indeed is a great woman and Um Jalal was one of the kindest people I knew. When my uncle Abu Jalal was not working (teacher, school principal, superintendent of schools in Bethlehem) or acting as the elder to resolve crises, he would spend time with his eight children or he would play cards with his brothers (my father & uncles). He was one of eight children and he had eight children. My late maternal grandparents also had eight children including my mother and my professional role model the late uncle Dr. Sana Atallah (first Palestinian biologist, killed age 27).
I remember one day when I first saw a calculator at Abu Jalal’s home. I do not remember if he or another uncle brought it but I do remember over 15 children in the room all wanting to touch it and test it and competing in this with our uncles. No cards were played that day. It was such a novelty. My paternal uncles were all teachers of things like science or math and we loved the curiosity and the sense of discovery they instilled on us by example because they were genuinely interested in knowledge for the sake of knowledge. These uncles are all dead now. But this and a thousand other memories came flooding in my mind the past few days as we lost both Um Jalal (mother of Jalal - last week died of Corona) and her son (my cousin Jalal) who died today (cancer). Jalal suffered over the past few months and I had felt so sad for hi. Jalal was not only a cousin but he was a close friend. He was a teacher who lost his job because he opposed the Israeli occupation. He wrote a book on the Qumsiyeh family. He was the oldest of my cousins (though not the first to die). I loved him dearly… a piece of me died with him. It is so sad to gather around coffins first of a mother and a few days later of her son. As always, a loss of close people reminds us of the borrowed time we have. It reminds us that only good deeds in life are what matter. It is not money or nice clothes or a nice house but what we do to each other that matters. I take this opportunity to apologize to those I may have offended and to pledge to redouble my own efforts to look inward, to be kind, and to love more. Here is something I wrote when my own father died.
It seems our lives here are one sad story after another. Here is what I wrote on the passing of my own father also on a Sunday (5 October 2003)
Tuesday I managed to enter Palestine. On Sunday October 5, 2003 at 10:25 am as I held his hand, my father took his last breath in the same village in Palestine where he took his first in 1929. At the last checkpoint on my way in, I had to walk across and find a ride home. I asked a guy with a phone next to a car if I could use his phone to call my family to send someone. We exchanged a few words and he was from my hometown. He said he will give me a ride home in a few minutes. We called and rode the 10 minutes ride home as if flying. Everyone was there but to me it was all a blur between the checkpoint and my father’s bedside. There he lifted his head and his functioning left arm, his voice quivering and unintelligible he started to cry as we hugged. My sisters tried to calm him down saying it was ok, I arrived safely, nothing happened. He shook his head and said something they interpreted to mean that I should have not troubled myself. After about a while he lay back physically and emotionally exhausted, looked around the room at the many faces of all his relatives then closed his eyes betraying his pain despite the sedatives.
From that Tuesday to Sunday his condition deteriorated very rapidly. On Tuesday and Wednesday I was able to decipher very few of the words he tried to say. He briefly awoke at rare things. Once smiling at my cousin, once on Friday he attempted to tell Umm Jalal (his deceased brother’s wife) that she should not trouble herself to come visit him. Once he raised his head to look at his sister and he once exerted a faint, painful smile at his great grandchild Yazan. We, his children took turns taking care of him with our mother. He suffered and died in dignity. This great educator had an accomplished life. He was a teacher, a school principal, and an entrepreneur (once managed a club and once a children’s toy store.) But above all he raised six children and imparted on us and his 11 grandchildren all that is good – teaching us to care for all fellow human beings. He was never bitter or angry over the misery that he and other Palestinians endured. He just preferred to live and encourage others to live. He insisted to me that he should die in his homeland and he breathed his last breath in his own bed surrounded by his wife, children (five of the six as my sister was still in Jenin), grandchildren, and close relatives. I felt a strange sense of miracle as bells coincidentally (?) rang just in the few moments of his death. An Islamic call to prayer also “coincidentally” sounded along the way to the prayer and burial. Thousands came to pay their respects. My father left us a heavy burden yet he leaves us a great deal of love and wisdom. Mish ra7 niksifak yaba (we will not fail you father.)
And here is what I wrote on the death of many children 9 years ago

Centenary
From The Times of London Centenary anniversary of the Mandate on Palestine (thanks to Michael for sharing this). The British empire was complicit with the Zionists in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in these 100 years (and killing over 100,000 natives and injuring nearly a million) and that is precisely why we have 7.5 million displaced or refugee Palestinians and the rest squeezed into 8% of their historic lands and living under racist apartheid policies. The prosperity of the Israeli economy like that of the US or Australia is baptized by the blood of the native Palestinians. Lest we forget, the latest "Israeli" nationality law calls the whole land the land of the Jews and only Jews have a right to "self-determination" in this land (Palestine). Britain owes us an apology and restitution. We have a right to return to our homes and lands and a right to end racist apartheid laws.
"The terms of the Palestine Mandate, published today, have notoriously been pulled about a great deal, but in final form they lay down conditions that are necessary for the liberty and progress of the country and for the satisfaction of Mr Balfour’s promise that Palestine should be a national home for the Jews. The phrase “national home” has never seemed to us a happy one; for, whereas some — ourselves among them — have interpreted it as meaning that the Palestinian nation, while being an amalgam of different races and creeds, should be one that the Jew will some day be able to call his own, others have interpreted the promise much more narrowly. The Mandate repeats the phrase without defining it; but on the whole, and despite the criticisms of the Jewish Chronicle, it seems to us to incline to the wider and more generous view. It speaks in the preamble of the “historical connexion” of Jewry with Palestine, and of “reconstructing” a national home for Jews there; later it recognizes the Zionist Organization, “so long as its organization and constitution are appropriate”, as a body that should cooperate with the Government on all matters affecting Jewish interests in the country. The British Government will depend on the Organization to interpret our message and discipline enthusiasm into practical channels. We want Palestine to become a nation, because only so will it be able to stand alone, and without the help of the Jews there can be no nation there. To the Arabs, too, the Jew brings the gifts of money and brains such as served them in the days of their political greatness. There are ample provisions in the Mandate for the protection of all existing rights and for absolute equality between races and creeds, and the Arab who agrees to be a Palestinian first and an Arab second will have full share in the prosperity of the country and whatever political distinction it may achieve. He will be unwise if he allows himself to be used by anti-Semites in this or any other country. There is no way to success except in a wise policy of Jewish immigration, which by union with the Arabs will form a strong Palestinian nationality, and it is one of the defects of the Mandate that this ambition of a future Commonwealth in Palestine is not expressly avowed."

Rising?
Last few nights, I slept very little and not just because I had a lot of work (95% of it volunteer work) but because of thinking, reading and trying to analyze where we as a people (Homo sapiens) are going. Questions that swirl in my mind are things like have we as a people a) learned anything from the pandemic or are we going to continue down the unsustainable paths of greed, consumerism, and injury to our planet, b) the ability to switch to empathy, caring, honesty, and dignity. The answers I was getting challenged soul and mind. Vaccine apartheid is being practiced and not just in Palestine (Israeli colonizers get it, Palestinians don’t) but around the world as rich (white ruled) countries who became rich because of a history of colonization and oppression get it while developing/poor countries impoverished by the attacks of the west (like Yemen and Syria) do not.
As my readers know, my wife and I have returned to Palestine in 2008 leaving an economically comfortable life in the USA. My main reason for returning was that I had thought that we could contribute to challenging the global system from here better than from the US (both are occupied). We thought we could help young people here more than in the US. We thought we could help build an environment where young people are empowered by building institutions here (like Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability at Bethlehem University – PalestineNature.org) and teaching at universities (I taught and still teach at several universities). In retrospect I would say a) we underestimated the challenges, and b) we were right that the work here is far more important than in the USA. The two things are not incompatible. Let me explain:
1) More challenge than anticipated: The engineered mental colonization was much deeper than we thought. See published chapter about this with one young person http://www.palestinenature.org/research/B46-QumsiyehandAmr.pdf This is so pervasive in all levels of society from governments to NGOs to academia. It is pervasive from leaders to common people on the street. It holds up progress. It is not an insurmountable challenge. As discussed in that chapter, we should start with small foci, emphasize those principled who act for the good of others, those who self sacrifice, and those who lose their lives in the struggle (martyrs). Those heroes light the way for so many; they are our role models; they keep the hope alive. For others, we merely have to remind them regularly and persistently that apathy or going along with the status quo is not good even for themselves from a selfish standpoint. We all eventually die. And as Jesus said: What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Or as is known from Islam: the greater Jihad is the inner jihad to reform our own self (Hadith). Or the Golden rule found in all religions: do unto others what you like done to you (or don’t do to others what you don’t like being done to you)
2) Correct choice: The US still needs a lot of work and I hope my first trip abroad will be to the US continue trying to change its policies. But Palestine needs even more. The Palestinian factions are meeting in Cairo to try to iron out the details o the arrangements in terms of election. I disagreed with Oslo process of capitulation (the second Nakba for us – see Edward Said and my 1990s writings on this) including its delusion of a state under occupation/elections under occupation etc. Many independent voices are not happy with this. They may reluctantly vote. But if people are to run in elections, they should have a clear program which 98% of the Palestinian people would support. Below highlights key points agreed to by many people (various discussions over the past few weeks with key figures) that should/must be included in such electoral program to produce the needed societal change. But anyway, working on the ground on these things is a must for all of us.
Suggested electoral platform/program for Palestine
1) Principles in politics: Support for te Universal
Declaration of Human rights (UDHR) including rights of refugees, rejection of
discrimination based on religion (e.g. we do not support a Jewish, an Islamic,
or a Christian state but states of their people). Palestinian UN recognized human
rights are not negotiable. These rights include a) the right of return for
refugees to their homes and lands and to be compensated for their suffering, b)
the full equality to women (in all aspects of social, educational and economic rights, c) the right to education to all, d) the right to due process of law,
e) the right to clean and healthy environment, d) right to food/sustenance and
shelter among others per UDHR.
2) There shall be complete freedom of expression through all
communication strategy. A legislative law that nullifies the so called
“electronic crimes decree” and replaces it with a clear law that guarantees all
people rights including freedom of speech and freedom of the press must be
produced
3) There must be mechanisms created to weed out corruption,
nepotism and other unethical behaviors in all levels of society. Laws and
systems must be instituted that allows return of any public money and REFORM (perhaps
a truth and reconciliation committee) and this must go hand in hand with reform
of the judiciary and making it completely independent of executive and
legislative branches. (We must weed out political appointment of judges). This
way legal system is used effectively in case of reconciliation and truth
committees fail to address the needs of change.
4) Government service is service for the
people. a) The president, legislative council members, and national council
members should serve no more than five years renewable with election for a
maximum of 10 years in each position. b) Legislators shall not get salary from
government nor any special benefit. c) They are serving their country on a
volunteer basis.
5) Society must take care of its
vulnerable communities. This includes taking care of the haircap (special need)
and elderly population.
6) Our environment must be protected. The legislative council
shall issue laws the give incentives for a green economy and disincentives for
pollution, use of disposable items (e.g. plastic).
7) We recognize that Oslo accords were a disaster for the Palestinian people and in anycase has expired in 1999 (they were interim accords for five years). We enter these elections not because we agree to the corrupt system that allowed elections for prisoners but because it provides a platform to present principled positions articulated above. We thus commit not to engage in any process that strengthens the status quo under occupation. We commit to weaken this authority and re-strengthen an independent PLO working outside of the limited power of the Oslo legislative council.

Bethlehem, Biden, and Biology
1) Bethlehem: Many were told Bethlehem (BeitLahem) comes from 'house of bread' in Hebrew. Others were told it comes from a 'house of meat' in arabic. Many were told Jerusalem comes from the Hebrew 'Yerushalaym'. All are wrong. Both Laham and Salem were Canaanite gods as Canaanite cities/towns were named after these Gods (Ur and Beit modifiers are abode and home of xx so Beit Dagan is also the house of the God Dagan). Our cities and towns Jerusalem (Ur Salem), Bethlehem (Beit Laham), Beit Dagan, Beit Saan (Beisan), Beit Sahour (my village) continued to be inhabited for thousands of years (never interrupted) as archeology and biology/genetics show. The native people continued to inhabit them even as they converted to oncoming religions such as Mosaic religious law (laws of Moses which predate 'Judaism;), Samaritan, Judaic (various sects), then Christianity (various sects), then Islam (also arious sects). European Jews like European Bahai, European Muslims, and European Christians are legitimately connected (by religion and stories discussed in their respective religious texts) to Palestine (Southern Canaan, Western part of the Fertile Crescent). But connectivity does not give a right to ethnically cleanse natives (e.g. Crusaders). Zionism (like many political movements before it) worked to restrict minds and thus ignore real history to justify the unjustifiable. Education about facts like the ones noted above would help promote unity and respect for all people and thus PEACE. I am 100% certain this is happening. But this is not going to save humanity (see third point below on biology)!
2) Biden: Readers asked me to comment on events in the US (including the storming of Trump supporters. Israeli commentators worried because some Trump supporters waved American flags. And a congressomen from Florida promised to put the Israeli flag next to teh American flag in front of her office. Trump did deliver for Zionism. But anyways, perhaps China should invade the US to bring it democracy like the US invaded dozens of countries under that excuse. Joking aside, the celebrated removal of Trump the one most people voted for as the lesse of two evils: Biden (also most of the 75 million who voted Trump did not like him, they voted for Biden as better). Biden at least MAY give an opening for pressure from progressives even though he appointed no progressive to any of his key positions. His administration is dominated by anti-progressives, anti-human rights people from his Vice President to his secretary of state to his Zionits chief of staff and attorney general. The actual winner of the primaries Sanders (who happens to be Jewish and who we supported) would have beaten Trump by much wider margin but alas the DNC stood against him. Trump was beginning to irritate the military industrial complex when he started pulling troops from Germany, Syria, Afghanistan and Biden was clearly going to have "robust" (read more military abroad) engagement in the world. And in any case Biden said that he would not reverse policies of Trump that are contrary to international law (e.g. moving the embassy to Jerusalem or recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel etc.). See Desmond Tutu in the Guardian: Joe Biden and the US peretense on Israel's nuclear weapons
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/dec/31/joe-biden-us-pretence-israel-nuclear-weapons
But again and even though the US is the most powerful country on earth at least economically and militarily (based in over 100 countries) it cannot and will not help save the world. In fact it was the biggest contributor to rampant consumerism that brought us to where we are -- which brings me to point 3.
3) Biology/Biodiversity: Many people are starting to realize that 2 resetting to go back to the time of "before Corona" and "before Trump" is simply not going to happen but even if miraculously we could, it would not be sustainable for humanity. To cite a few reasons: climate change, nuclear proliferation, economic systems of consumerism, human population explosion, pandemics (watch for new viruses and mutated COVID19), biodiversity loss and much more. As a biologist I am very, very worried. Our interconnected global ecosystem cannot go on! There is urgency. Governments are not the solution but are actually a big part of the problem; all positive change happens by people pushing and not merely via electing "representatives". As a species we can shape our future for good or bad. It is time for all people to mobilize. We need a global change, This is the generation to do it or fail. If we succeed, our children and grandchildren will thank us. If we fail, whatever life forms remain on earth will do well without us and if they develop their intelligence in ways to allow them to record history, they would simply record that humans caused their own extinction but dinosaurs went extinct with a meteorite (incidentally that latter extinction allowed mammals to evolve and we humans should be grateful for that unfortunate-for-most-dinosaurs event).
