I remember from eighth grade, in around 1967, we were taught the inverted funnel method and the funnel method, where the narrow part is the thesis sentence, which is what you are trying to persuade the reader of the truth of, which assumes you make clear its meaning. The classical name for this discipline is rhetoric. An illegal regime camouflages itself in bad rhetoric, and good rhetoric strips away that camouflage. As the SAT test used to ask, what is the main idea of this paragraph? A statement might contain what looks like a thesis sentence, such as "We care deeply about our students", but contain the components of an argument that puts forth the opposite thesis. A statement that refuses to name its main idea or thesis is itself an interesting thing to study and teach. Or a statement could contain two contradictory theses.<br />Without clear exposition, there is no science, no literature, no society. You could define an illegal regime as one which rules by "divide and conquer" down to the level of the individual mind, by entombing the subjects, not citizens, in nonsensical wordiness, bags of nonsense, from which the individual finds it very hard to escape. Paul Simon says in a song, "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all." He went on to college. I wonder what he made of his college experience?chrisrushlauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11432949074147807503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2771563516536608026.post-42498975188202860472016-10-12T03:25:16.831-07:002016-10-12T03:25:16.831-07:00Thank you for sharing these inspiring narratives a...Thank you for sharing these inspiring narratives about how the Palestine Museum of Natural History is creating a transformative space in Palestine where youth can learn about and develop global citizenship and sustainability. --Lou Cristillo, Director of Teacher Education, Leadership and Teacher Development (LTD) Program, AMIDEAST West Bank/GazaLCristillohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15600997959561278753noreply@blogger.com
