Gaza’s Contribution to Civilization

The Gaza littoral - a narrow coastal corridor between Asqalan (Ashkelon) in the north and Rafah at the Egyptian border - occupies a strategic position on the coastal axis linking Africa and Western Asia (the Levant) and is often referred to historically as the Via Maris. Its geography made it a repeated meeting place for goods, peoples, and ideas and explains why archaeological and textual records show continuous human activity from the Chalcolithic/Early Bronze periods onward (de Miroschedji et al.; Tell es-Sakan excavations). This study synthesizes major published finds and contemporary reporting to outline Gaza’s long-term contributions to Mediterranean and Near Eastern civilization. In the 1947 UN Partition plan, the strip was much larger than it is now (and being demolished). Estimates of 200,000 to as many as half a million perished in the past two years of Israeli onslaught on that land (3/4 women and children, and most of the residents are refugees from the Nakba of 1948-1950).

Recent archaeological work has shown that the Gaza littoral hosted urban settlements as early as 8,000 years ago. Excavations at Tell es-Sakan (discovered during construction work in 1998 and excavated by teams including de Miroschedji) reveal mud-brick urban deposits, storage contexts and evidence for a mixed agricultural-maritime economy during the Early Bronze Age. Such evidence indicates that Gaza’s coastal settlements were part of the emergent urban economies of southern Levant and were in contact with contemporaneous Egyptian administrative and economic activities. The Tell es-Sakan sequence places Gaza within the first waves of coastal urbanization in the eastern Mediterranean.

During the 2nd millennium BCE the Gaza littoral was integrated into the Canaanite network and repeatedly intersected with Egyptian imperial interests. Archaeological assemblages (imported pottery, architecture and small finds) and Egyptian texts show that southern Levantine coastal sites functioned as waystations and focal points for goods moving between the Nile, the Levantine interior and the Mediterranean. Excavation reports and regional syntheses emphasize Gaza’s position as part of coastal exchange networks during this period.

The Iron Age coastal transformation included the arrival (or intensification) of Aegean-influenced material culture in the southern Levant — the so-called Philistine phenomenon — of which Gaza was one of the principal polities in the Philistine pentapolis (Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, Gath). Philistine pottery styles, new craft traditions and evidence for specialized workshops and maritime activities attest to cultural fusion between local Canaanite traditions and incoming Aegean elements. Although modern development has limited large-scale excavation directly inside some parts of Gaza City, comparative work from neighboring coastal sites and site surveys indicates Gaza’s role within this dynamic maritime and craft network.

From the Persian through the Hellenistic and Roman periods Gaza sustained major port facilities and urban morphology demonstrating integration into Mediterranean trade networks. Archaeologists have identified the ancient port installations often called Anthedon (sometimes identified with the Balakhiyya/Blakhiya/ Tell Iblakhiyya area north of Gaza) and Maiuma (the port quarter associated with Gaza) among the principal maritime facilities. Excavations and rescue archaeology, including Franco-Palestinian missions at Anthedon, and the 2023 discovery of a substantial Roman-era cemetery (with lead sarcophagi) near Jabaliya, testify to a complex, economically engaged society with elite burial practices and broad Mediterranean connections.

Byzantine churches (recorded on medieval maps such as the Madaba mosaic) and early Islamic administrative records show continuity of urban life and the adaptation of port and land networks and continued fluporsihing economy as well as peaceful coexistence of Christians and Muslims from 6th to 20th century AD. During the Mamluk periods coastal fortifications and administrative structures continued to emphasize the strategic importance of Gaza. Under Ottoman administration and into modernity Gaza functioned as a regional market center and waypoint for caravan and coastal traffic; travelers’ accounts and administrative records document a long continuity of agricultural production, market exchange, and civic life. Throughout its history this heroic strip of territory defeated mighty armies and inspired legendary victories while continuing to prosper [that is until this recent genocide which is not only unprecedented in the region but globally).

Recent decades have seen important archaeological discoveries (e.g., Tell es-Sakan publications, Anthedon excavations, the Roman-era Jabaliya cemetery) alongside increasing concern about threats to sites. Scholarly analyses and investigative reports emphasize the twin pressures of conflict, urban development, coastal erosion and inadequate heritage management on Gaza’s archaeological record. International teams and local scholars have collaborated in rescue excavations, but wartime destruction and damage to heritage structures have been reported (notably during the conflicts of 2023–2024), raising urgent ethical questions about documentation, local stewardship, and international responsibility for preservation and reconstruction.

Our own environmental studies in the area some using detailed satellite images/remote sensing show 1) rich biodiversity, 2) decimation of the tree cover and habitats (see Yin et al. 2025). Thus, there is devastation for both natural and cultural heritage of this rich area.

Gaza also enriched is with thousands of scholars and contributors to human civilization. Here are just a random selection

Silvanus of Gaza (d. ~311 CE) – Early Christian bishop of Gaza who was martyred during the Diocletian persecution. He is remembered as one of the earliest Christian leaders in the region.

Aeneas of Gaza (~5th century) – Neo‑Platonic philosopher and Christian convert, associated with the Rhetorical School of Gaza. He wrote philosophical works that merged classical philosophy with Christian thought.

Dorotheus of Gaza (~500–560/580) – Monk and ascetic teacher near Gaza, author of spiritual discourses that influenced early Christian monasticism and ethical thought.

Sulayman al-Ghazzi (c. 940–1027) – A Christian bishop and poet in Fatimid Palestine, Sulayman al-Ghazzi was the first known Arab Christian poet to write religious verse in Arabic. His diwan (poetic anthology) offers insights into Christian life during the era of caliph al-Hakim. 

Ibn Qudama (1147–1223) – A prominent Hanbali jurist and theologian, Ibn Qudama was born in Gaza and is renowned for his works on Islamic jurisprudence, including al-Mughni, a comprehensive legal encyclopedia. 

Abu Bakr al-Nabulsi – A 17th-century Islamic scholar from Gaza, al-Nabulsi was known for his contributions to Islamic jurisprudence and theology, particularly within the Shafi'i school of thought. 

Shady Alsuleiman – A contemporary Islamic scholar and imam, Alsuleiman is recognized for his work in Islamic education and community leadership, focusing on promoting understanding of Islamic teachings in modern contexts. 

Ayman Hassouna – A Palestinian archaeologist and university lecturer, Hassouna has worked extensively on excavations in Gaza, including the Byzantine Church of Jabalia, contributing significantly to the understanding of Gaza's ancient history. 

Sufian Tayeh (1971–2023) – A physicist and educator, Tayeh served as the president of the Islamic University of Gaza. He was known for his work in physics and applied mathematics and was tragically killed in an Israeli airstrike in December 2023. 

Mohammad Assaf (b. 1992) – Singer from the Gaza Strip who gained fame by winning Arab Idol, becoming a symbol of hope and cultural pride for Palestinians.

Dr. Refaat Alareer (1979–2023) – A Renaissance scholar from Gaza, Alareer was a professor and writer who contributed to academic and cultural discourse. He was killed during the 2023 conflict, leaving a legacy of intellectual engagement.

Conclusion: Early urbanization and administrative activities in Gaza contributed to the regional network of production, storage, and exchange that underpinned complex societies in the Near East. Acting as a coastal conduit, Gaza facilitated the transmission of commodities and material culture between Egypt and the broader Levantine-Mediterranean economy. Port infrastructure, long-distance maritime commerce, specialized fisheries and the movement of Mediterranean goods and ideas through Gaza contributed directly to the economic vitality and cultural pluralism of the region. Technological and stylistic exchange (ceramics, metallurgy, textile production, and ship-related crafts) that flowed through the Gaza littoral influenced craft traditions across the southern Levant and beyond.The Gaza littoral’s long-term contributions to civilization are best understood as a combination of (1) geographical advantage (coastal route and hinterland productivity), (2) sustained maritime and land exchange networks that carried goods and ideas, (3) local craft and agricultural production that fed regional markets, and (4) repeated cultural contact zones that produced hybrid forms of material culture and religious life. Gaza’s sustained role as a market, agricultural supplier, and transport hub helped to link inland and coastal economies for centuries, transmitting crops, commodities and cultural practices. This was an essential contribution to circum-Mediterranean coastal communities and over 30 countries have direct connections to Gaza. Gaza’s archaeological record informs broader historical narratives of Mediterranean connectivity. Preserving that record is necessary for reconstructing local histories that feed into global understandings of ancient economies, religions, and technologies and is an essential component of knowledge to shape a peaceful future that is not repeatedly marred by genocides and holocausts (due to colonialism, imperialism).

 The holocaust/genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza strip continue [1]. Calculations show that excess mortality has been much higher than the reported 64,000 violent deaths (71% women and children)[2].  And now the largest push for ethnic cleansing is happening with methodical destruction of any remaining buildings in North Gaza and Gaza city. But my friends there tell me since there is no safe place and death is the same whether in north or south, that they are staying (including the Palestinian Christian community). But the carnage is not merely in the Gaza strip. Israel also bombed the West Bank (creating tens of thousands of homeless Palestinians) and bombed seven other countries (latest being Qatar, a supposed ally). Israel even wanted to punish a Palestinian village so it destroyed 10,000 of its olive trees [3]. Western Zionist controlled media talk endlessly about the 20 Israeli soldiers still captive in Gaza (calling them hostages). They do not talk about the 12,000-15,000 political prisoners kidnapped [4] and held by Israeli army and being tortured (75 already perished under torture).

The ephemeral Zionist regime added to its long list of international law violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity by attacking yet another country (Qatar, seventh country attacked in the last two years). Somehow US and Qatar "successfully defended" the US military base in Qatar against the Iranian missiles after the US attacked Iran but did not move a finger to defend Qatar against Israeli missiles.

But the primary sponsor of our people's genocide is the US government which continues to fund, help, and shield the Israeli apartheid regime as it commits the most heinus crimess known in history. All while claiming to want to mediate while giving Israel a green light to kill any negotiations (and negotiators as happened in Qatar). Trump's 100 word "deal" for the resistance to please his Zionist (Epstein video holders) masters [5].

This US current administration like the previous one is genocidal but the crudity and vulgar arrogance that is exhibited now is beyond belief. The Zionist lobby is using blackmail and bribes to destroy not only Palestine but also US interest for the sake of Zionist fantasies to build a new 21st century colonial power between the Nile and Euphrates. In the past two years, the world has changed and clearly supporting the genocide is not a winning card so the US "leaders" who succumbed to the lobby are on the wrong side of history. Things are changing. Zionists now try all sorts of tactics. This did not start now but they are pulling all the dirty tools from their history. From false flag operations to labeling human rights activists as "anti-semites" to using legal and financial leverage to crush free speech (e.g. showing support for Palestine Action is considered "supporting terrorism" in the UK) to outright blackmail [6]. None of this seems to make a difference as poll after poll show increase in public support for Palestine even in traditionally well controlled Western Countries [7].

Ordinary US citizens have begged for gun control for decades. At least 20,000 Americans are senselessly killed each year. Ironically, right wing MAGA republican spokesmen Charlie Kirk was killed by a sniper while he was advocating for NO gun control![8].
While he rose to fame supporting the genocide and dehumanization of our people [9], he was also beginning to change and challenge the Zionist stranglehold of the US politics and thus we would not discount this being a Mossad hit to 1) silence him, and 2) provide yet another false-flag operation (there are many). The shooter was a highly professional sniper who conveniently disappeared (maybe already back in Tel Aviv)

But times as indicated above are changing. The crime syndicate otherwise known as he Zionist project is unraveling. The signs are everywhere and the US cannot even prevent its own collapse to help stop the collapse of Zionism [10]. There is even "Death of the Holocaust Industry" [11].  Western elites reinvented their ugly racist system of control and sold it as a ‘moral’ cause packaged in Zionist propaganda [12]. Peter Mandelson Jewish Zionist (Israel first) is now sacked as a British ambassador to the USA following revealed connection to Jeffrey Epstein (Mossad agent who obtained videos to blackmail politicians and business people) [13].

We are inspired by by both individual actions like confronting Trump [14] and by collective action like the Hind Rajab Foundation pursuing the perpetrators of genocide [15] and the flotilla of boats headed to Gaza [16]. We continue to be inspired by conferences like the People's Conference for Palestine 2025 [17] and the Second Palestine Health Alliance Symposium, titled “The Gaza Strip in the Grip of Genocide: Death, Starvation and Trauma”. The symposium will take place remotely via Zoom and is scheduled on Tuesday September 30, 2-4 PM, 2025 Palestine/Lebanon time [18]. We continue to be inspired by the BDS movement [bdsmovement.net].

I and other analysts have repeatedly said that this genocide in Gaza and attacks on five countries so far in 21 months is not done by the Israeli regime alone. Israel/US killed >1000 civilians in Iran and Palestine in this last week. Israeli leaders still boast about their use of starvation and thirst as a tool to achieve their stated goal to "reshape" (dominate) the region and liquidate Palestine as an idea. Western media like the AP, the BBC and CNN and Fox News regurgitate the lies fed to them by Zionists and try to shield the public from facts like the fact that we are already in the middle of a global war started to support colonialism and imperialism. The common people get their information from independent sources which explains why there is now a big chasm between people and governments in the West and why those same governments are now trying desperately to suppress free speech. The facts cannot be hidden. Facts include that the Israeli regime which refuses to sign non proliferation treaty has the only nuclear arsenal in our region. Facts like 8.5 million Palestinian refugees caused by ethnic cleansing by this western supported regime. Fact is that some 18 trillion in US national debt is due to wars done on behalf of the Israeli regime.

Here is another smaller example of propaganda. According to Iranian and independent media outlets, the target 19 June 2025 was the techno park for the Israeli military intelligence with hundreds of officers working there developing cyberwarefare. By all measures, the attack was successful and damage to an adjacent and rather empty Soroko hospital building was due to strength of the blast (no patients or staff were there). Yet, suppression of information immediately started and no mention was made in the propaganda blitz about "Iran targeting civilians" and "hospitals" was made of the three hospitals targeted intentionally in Tehran or the 38 hospitals targeted or blown up in Gaza by the Israeli intentional campaign collapse all healthcare system in Gaza. Israel passed a law that makes it illegal to photograph or report on damage done during this war to Israeli infrastructure with anyone violating this subject to up to two year imprisonment. Their worry is that this can result in citizens finding out that the official narrative is false and might increase dissent. But Israelis are looking to leave anyway (70% hold foreign passports) even against government attempt to keep them hostage. Israel killed 230 journalists in Gaza to enforce no reporting of methodical and intentional genocide and destruction of essentially all hospitals and clinics in the Gaza Strip (see reports by World Health Organization and other UN agencies).

There are now credible reports from many sources that the levels of extermination and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the Gaza strip is higher than officially released and in 19 months could be over 250,000 [1]. The evidence is so compelling that all human rights organizations and the UN documented GENOCIDE and ETHNIC CLEANSING [2]. Over 200,000 are already out of the Gaza strip (enriching pockets of Egyptian officials who demanded $5000-10,000/person for exit) and 95% of the remaining population homeless.  Perhaps that is why Trump is now speaking about taking one million (who are left) Palestinians to Libya after Israel finished cleaning them from all areas of Gaza towards the south concentration camp of Rafah. Meanwhile 'business' goes on as usual: billions milked from corrupt Arab dictators, Israeli embassies function around the world (no sanctions), the Zionist lobby infiltrated more organizations and governments globally, blackmailing/extorting weak politicians like Trump and Bin Salman with scandalous videos and information gathered by Mossad agents like Epstein, "Israel" is competing in Eurovision, Arab "leaders" (not one of them elected fairly by people) met in Baghdad to issue yet another useless declaration that their masters feel happy about, famine spreading, expenditure on arms expand to trillions, the climate and environmental global catastrophe deepens, education and healthcare globally get worse. The tiny 0.5% (in numbers) continue to reap money and get richer from their positions and now own 50% of the world’s money by thievery from the poor [3]. US taxpayers are saddled with trillions in debt thanks to wars fought on behalf of Zionism [4].

The bad news may lead some to despair and tell us we are entering a new dark age [5]. Yet, candles in this darkness are far too many to snuff out by the Zionist/imperial/colonial juggernaut [6]. Actually hundreds of millions of good people acting positively for sustainability, peace and justice. Look around you for these positive initiatives and support them and create more. Organize. Afterall, every social positive movement came from such people action: there are thousands of examples from women right to vote to civil rights to Zapatista empowerment to Rohingya to Algeria and Vietnam independence. Even in the heart of the empire today, the movement is tremendous. Look at student movements at universities or even common people in Palestine and how they resist. These are the true heroes. The profiteers (oppressors) will be swept to the dustbin of history. They are the few, we the oppressed are the many and must organize better (it is an existential threat). Action based on knowledge is the best antidote for despair.

It used to be argued that the deep state consist of moneyed interests, largey hidden. Now we reached a point that murderous moneyed interests no longer work behind the scenes. The ultraright and afscists and neoNazis and Zionists are front and centre and openly cause millions to suffer with impunity. They even brag about their "common interests". The right wing CEOs and government officials like the President of Argentina openly declared building an alliance of leaders around the world who believe and practice policies of "money trumps people". At the same forum convicted felon Donald Trump delivered a belligerent, triumphalist, and (textbook) colonialist speech touting a vision of the world where elite business interests trump human rights.
 
Eisenhauer warned US citizens in his farewell speech: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military–industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."

 لكن الآن المخاطر أعلى بكثير. يمكن للصراعات وتغير المناخ المدفوعين بالجشع أن يدمرا البشرية. علامات واضحة على حرب عالمية كارثية قادمة وستكون حروب نووية واستعمال الليزر من الأقمار الصناعية لتدمير مدن. وطبعا التغير المناخي (انظر الحرائق في كاليفورنيا المشتعلة الآن كدليل لاحظ انخفاض الأمطار وارتفاع درجات الحرارة عندنا والحرائق والإعصارات عالميا). ولذا يتناقص الإنتاج الزراعي وترتفع الأسعار.

Shambhala prophecy fulfilled?

My family is Greek Orthodox and Christmas falls on 7 January but we do not celebrate. Only religious observances. After all as a recipient of these messages (Paul) summed it well: "Every day, Israel is killing 50 to 100 or more Palestinians in Gaza, who are already enduring unbearable suffering. 70% of those killed are women and children, which reflects the composition of the population. This gives the lie to any claims that Israel tries to minimize harm to civilians." But it is not just in Gaza. Two children were murdered in the West Bank Tuesday (our Eastern Christmas). The Israeli interior minister who is in charge of police and of the West Bank (Smotrich) stated that he has a plan that would make the Palestinian cities " including Al-Funduq, Nablus and Jenin LOOK LIKE Jabalya [devastated area in northern Gaza]". We had a project in the area of Al-Funduq to protect a rare wetland ecosystem but this is threatened by the Israeli plans of colonial expansion (see https://www.palestinenature.org/research/first-vernal-pool.pdf). The army and settlers (is there a difference?) are already engaged in pogroms and infrastructure destruction in the North West Bank while letting the Palestinian Authority try to root out resistance in Jenin Refugee Camp. This is ethnic cleansing in the West Bank as in Gaza Strip as in what happened in 1948 and 1967 is in service of an expansionist and western supported displacement settler colonial project (that is all it is!). This project's military juggernaut has now taken control of most of Southern Syria including six major water sources!!!

This is expansion of the smaller empire (Israel, "mini-me") and its sponsor (the US empire) where the new emperor (Trump) is now talking about annexing Canada and Greenland (Denmark area). But is it true that: "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must"? (attributed to Thucydides). Millions of people resisting empire around the world say NO. Further, I asked AI to tell me about empires that expanded and did horrific things just before their collapse due to overstretching resources and hubris. AI gave me MANY examples; in fact maybe just about every empire in the past 2000 years. But the stakes are much higher now. Conflicts and climate change both driven by greed can destroy humanity. From 1200 years, there is the Shambhala prophecy that talks of a time when the earth is in a perilous position (climate change - see fires in California raging now as evidence and signs of global catastrophic war) the leaders will be interested destruction but the people will then have access to amazing new technologies and come together to save the world and each other:
